Sikhote Alin Meteorite Stolen from the University of New Mexico
One of our museum display specimens was stolen out of its case -- most likely just before Christmas break, during opening hours. The specimen is a "Sikhote Alin" weighing 9490 grams. I would like to alert the meteorite collector community to be on the look-out for this specimen, it is unique and easily identifiable as our property.

What Is A Meteorite?
Meteorites have many meanings and have many fascinating tales to tell, but they can be summed up simply as rocks from space.
Meteorites are fragments of rock and iron that populate the solar system, and most of them originate in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Each one orbits in its own path around the Sun, much like our own planet does on a larger scale...

Giant Meteorite Discovered in China
A massive space rock one that could rank as one of the largest meteorites ever recovered has been found in a remote and mountainous region in northwest China, according to news reports.
The huge and oddly-shaped rock was found in the Altai mountains in China's Xinjiang Uygur province, according to Sky and Telescope magazine. Earlier this month, Baolin Zhang, a meteorite specialist at the Beijing Planetarium, led a small team up a 9,500-foot (2,900-meter) summit to investigate reports of the supposed meteorite.

Will colonizing meteorites and asteroids with bacteria one day save life as we know it?
Mautner became interested in the idea when he was studying at New Yorks Rockefeller University in the early 1970s. It was there, in the midst of the Cold Wars nuclear standoff, that he felt our survival really became a question. Hes been advocating directed panspermia ever since. In 1995, he founded the Panspermia Society for Life in Space, and for most of his professional life, he has studied whether microbes can survive on asteroids and meteorites in space. This, he says, is necessary for directed panspermia to work.
